How to ask clients for reviews, with templates that get answered
Happy clients rarely leave reviews on their own. Most would, if someone asked at the right moment with a link that takes a minute. Ask at the right time, in your own words, and make it one tap.
The short answer
- Ask within a few hours of the session, while the result is fresh.
- Ask personally and once, with a direct link.
- Ask three questions, not ten: before, after, and what they would tell a friend.
- Ask everyone, never only happy clients, and never pay for reviews.
- Turn kind words into Google reviews by inviting them to post the same text there.
When to ask
| Business | Best moment |
|---|---|
| Salons, barbers, beauty | The same evening, when they have seen the result in their own mirror |
| Massage and wellness | A few hours after, when they feel the benefit |
| Personal training, classes | After a milestone: the tenth session, a personal best |
| Coaching, consulting | Right after the client tells you something worked |
| Tutoring | After a good test result, asking the parent |

Asking in person
Asking in person first, then sending the link, gets far more replies than the link alone: they have already said yes.
Testimonial form questions
Question 3 is the one to put on your website: it is written to the exact person who is reading it.
Turning testimonials into Google reviews
A testimonial on your own site convinces people already there. A Google review brings people who were searching. The easiest way to get both is to ask once for the testimonial and then invite the client to post the same words on Google, with the text ready to paste.
- Find your Google review link in your Google Business Profile ("Ask for reviews").
- Send it after they have written their testimonial, as a second, optional step.
- Never offer a discount, gift or prize draw for a review. Google does not allow incentives and removes such reviews, and the FTC forbids buying positive reviews.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, briefly and by name.

How Calybee does it for you
Calybee builds the whole routine into booking:
- The ask goes out by itself after every session, in your words, with your own review page.
- You approve before anything shows. Nothing appears on your site until you say so.
- One more step to Google: after writing, the client is invited to post the same words on Google and your other review sites.
- Reviews you already have come in from Google, Facebook, Trustpilot, Yelp, Fresha, Booksy, Treatwell, LinkedIn and more, by pasting a link (up to 100 kept on either plan; reviews clients write are unlimited).
- Shown where people decide: as a wall on your site or a widget on any website, with the star average worked out.
Pair it with reminder emails so the review request is one of the emails clients already expect.
Questions people ask
When is the best time to ask a client for a review?
Within a few hours of the session, while the result is fresh and the client is still pleased. For coaching or longer programs, ask after a milestone, when the client has just told you something went well.
How do I ask for a Google review without being pushy?
Ask once, personally, say why it matters to a small business, and send the direct link so it takes a minute. Never offer a discount or gift in return: Google does not allow incentives for reviews, and the FTC forbids buying positive ones.
What questions should a testimonial form ask?
What they were struggling with before, what changed, and what they would tell a friend who is unsure. Add a star rating and permission to show their first name. Three questions get answered; ten do not.
Can I ask only happy clients for reviews?
Ask everyone. Asking only happy clients (review gating) breaks Google's policies, and an honest mix of reviews is more believable to people reading them.
How does Calybee collect reviews?
Every client gets a review request after their session. They write it on your own review page, you approve it before it shows, and Calybee invites them to post the same words on Google. You can also import reviews you already have from 30 places.
